Say you want, for some reason, a list of all the countrys in the world (246 at the time of writing this). You start up your favorite search engine and do a query for it. Before you know it you end up with more than a xx-ion hits. A lot of those hits may have the information you want, but.... how complete is the list, who's list is it, what format has the list, is the list recent, how can you get the list in the (web)-application you are making, how are you going to maintain the information you retrieved, etc.

When you are informed about those issues you have better means to decide if this information is useable for you. Suppose there is a way to get the following information:

a list of country names and code elements exists;
the formal name is ISO 3166-1 and it is an international standard;
the list contains the names of all the countrys in the world and their 2 letter code;
the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the maintainer;
the list is available in 3 formats (html, txt and xml);
the list is available in 2 languages (english and french);
the location of this list here (english) and here (french);
the list is updated whenever a change of country name and/or alpha-2 code element is made in ISO 3166-1;
the list is used for instance by/for:
- All national postal organizations in the world exchange international mail between them in containers carrying ISO 3166-1 codes for identification of the country of destination
- The Internet domain name sytems uses ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes to define country-coded Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs), e.g., for the countries listed above; ".fr", ."za", ".au", ".br", or ".jp".

Suppose there is a way to organise this.... or far more better.... to create this, or far,far more better .... to be part of the creation process :-)

The eurOSinLiB project want's to handle those issues by providing an opensource linkbase with valued links and, on the other hand, by providing/creating the tools to access this linkbase to retrieve the valued links, so they can be processed in applications. The main goal of the project is to create the tools to make valued Open Source Information accessible and by finding way's to better useable Open Source Information.
